Clay County court adopts resolution opposing elimination of countywide polling and electronic poll books

Clay County Commissioner’s Court unanimously approved a resolution Feb. 24 opposing proposed legislative changes that would eliminate countywide polling locations, electronic poll books and electronic marking devices.
Val (county elections official) told the court the legislature is considering ending countywide polling locations and electronic poll books, which she said would force counties that currently operate countywide early‑voting sites to expand precinct‑based operations on election day. She said the change would increase costs for neighboring counties and could delay election results if jurisdictions revert to purely paper processes.
Val said counties that use countywide polling for early voting do so for two weeks and that eliminating that model would require additional polling locations, equipment purchases and staffing. She also said removing electronic poll books and moving back to hand‑counted paper ballots would reduce accuracy and could delay results for weeks.
Commissioner Jack moved and Commissioner Ben seconded the resolution; the court approved it by general consent, 4–0.
