The State Department told reporters that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname March 26–27 to advance U.S. foreign-policy priorities in the Caribbean. The announcement was made at a department press briefing before questions began.
The department said Rubio will hold bilateral engagements in Jamaica with heads of state from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti. The spokesperson said the trip will focus on promoting regional cooperation to address illegal immigration, counter transnational organized crime, respond to Haiti’s political and security challenges and strengthen the United States’ economic partnership with Caribbean countries.
The spokesperson added that several U.S. reporters who cover the State Department will travel with the delegation. No further details on meetings, official schedules, or supporting programs were provided at the briefing.
