Senate introduces multiple bills and adjusts the calendar; several measures placed on informal calendar
Summary
Several bills were introduced on the Senate floor and multiple measures were placed on the informal calendar or otherwise advanced to committee/perfection. Most introductions were made without explanation; the chamber later moved several bills to the informal calendar and to the order of perfection.
The Senate recorded the introduction of numerous Senate bills and took a sequence of calendar-management actions during the Feb. 6 session.
Introductions: Senators read bill titles into the record; most sponsors declined to explain the measures on the floor. Introduced bills included (not exhaustive from the floor record): Senate Bill 687 (Hudson; administrative rules), SB 688 (Lewis; sales tax exemption for food), SB 689 (Coleman; inspections of certain long-term care facilities), SB 690 (Gregory; proprietary schools), SB 691–694 (May; redaction of certain court-record information; expungement; charter schools in metropolitan districts; elder abuse and neglect hotline), SB 695 (Nirenburn; mental health efforts in public schools), and other bills read by senators during the introductions period.
Calendar and procedural moves: The Senate moved to the order of business for senate bills for perfection. Several bills were placed on the informal calendar (for example, SB 79, SB 58, SB 46 and SB 22 were specifically requested to be laid over on the informal calendar during floor proceedings). Senate Bill 163 was taken up for perfection and later perfected (separate article). Senate Bill 84 was taken up for perfection, debated, and ultimately laid over for further work (separate article).
Why it matters: The introductions formally place measures into the legislative process; placement on the informal calendar or perfection calendar affects scheduling for committee review or subsequent floor consideration.
What’s next: Sponsors or committees will take up bills placed on informal calendars or perfected bills will proceed through subsequent legislative steps; many of the introduced bills were not debated on the floor during this session.
