Mobile County board honors students, teams and scholarship winners

Mobile County Public Schools recognized FCCLA state winners from Davidson and Citronelle, Vigor High School state basketball champions and scholarship recipients from Baker High School during the April 1 board meeting.
The Mobile County Public Schools Board of Education recognized student achievements and presented scholarships and certificates during its April 1 meeting.
Davidson and Citronelle High School culinary students were honored after qualifying for the FCCLA national cooking competition by winning State Star Cooking events. Emily Carter of Davidson won first place in culinary for a blackened catfish with crawfish étouffée over Parmesan grits with an apple-craisin coleslaw. Ella McCarthy of Davidson won first place in the baking-and-pastry category and Kaylee Rivers of Citronelle placed third; the students had two and a half hours to complete a multi-item cooking and decorating challenge and received scholarship awards as described at the meeting. Teachers Rachel Baxter of Davidson and Casey Shinesse of Citronelle were acknowledged as their instructors.
The board also recognized Vigor High School’s state basketball champions, led by coach Lee Riley and assistant coaches James MacInnes Jr., Darren Williams and Jamilia MacInnes Riley; the team defeated Sylacauga 59–49 to win the state championship, the board said. Board members praised both athletic and academic accomplishments.
Separately, members of the Retired Educators Group presented scholarships to local students. Zioneli Ortiz of Baker High School (unable to attend) and Lillian Sigler of Baker High School were named scholarship recipients. The board read highlights of Sigler’s academic record: a weighted GPA of 4.76, an ACT score of 33, a super-scored SAT of 35, and class rank 6 of 545. Sigler told the board she plans to attend Mississippi State University and wrote in her application that she intends to pursue a degree in secondary education with a concentration in mathematics.
The recognitions segment included certificates and remarks from board members and district officials; the board encouraged the students and their teachers and invited them to return to their classes following the presentations.
