The Smithfield Town Council approved a series of appointments and reappointments to municipal boards and commissions, renewed liquor licenses and one extended-hours request, and scheduled a public hearing on proposed zoning language for groundwater protection.
Appointments approved (motions carried by recorded voice votes or unanimous 'Aye' votes as shown in the meeting minutes) included: William A. Poore, Esquire, reappointed municipal court judge for the term Jan. 2025–Jan. 2027; Terrence Turner, Esquire, appointed probate court judge Jan. 2025–Jan. 2027; Stephen R. Archimel, Esquire, appointed police prosecution solicitor Jan. 2025–Jan. 2027; Anthony M. Galone Jr., Esquire, appointed town solicitor to serve at the pleasure of the council (motion amended to reflect no fixed term under the charter); David Orsillo reappointed planning board solicitor to serve at the pleasure of the council; Gregory Guertin and Roberto Alvarado appointed to the Land Trust (terms expiring Sept. 2026 and Sept. 2028, respectively); Mark Bushey and Heather Koya appointed to the Conservation Commission (terms expiring July 2025 and July 2027, respectively); and Lisa Wadler appointed to the Economic Development Commission (term expiring Sept. 2025).
The council also approved renewal of multiple intoxicating beverage licenses for businesses listed in the packet, including Cedar's Fill, Vowels English Tea and Pie Shop, Cumberland Farms (including an extended-hours request), Excel Holdings (Hampton Inn & Suites Providence/Smithfield), and Target store T1404 (Putnam Pike). The Cumberland Farms extended-hours renewal was approved after a brief public hearing in which no members of the public spoke.
The council scheduled a public hearing for Feb. 4, 2025, to consider amendments to Article 9, Section 9.5 (Davis Liquid Waste Superfund Site Groundwater Protection Overlay District); council members noted and corrected a typographical reference to Section 9.3 in the draft.
Most appointment and license motions were approved by unanimous voice vote noted in the minutes as 'Aye' or 'Ayes have it.' When the council tabled a zoning board appointment it was moved to a later meeting by motion and second.
