The Smithfield Town Council voted on March 4 to award RFP 24-104 for custodial services for Town Hall, the municipal ice rink and the Department of Public Works to Coverall, the lowest qualified bidder.
Staff presented a bid summary showing six bidders; the recommended award to Coverall proposed monthly rates of $8.35 for Town Hall, $3.70 for the municipal ice rink and $3.10 for Public Works. Staff said they had followed up with the recommended vendor to verify the services offered. The purchasing agent and staff recommended the award despite the contract being "a few dollars more than we typically pay." The chair put the motion; council approved by voice vote with the chair announcing "Ayes have it." No roll-call tally was provided.
Council members discussed whether the ice rink had historically been cleaned in-house; one member said rink staff had previously handled cleaning, but staff replied a cleaning company has been in place for some time. The motion approved awarding the contract to Coverall of 33 College Hill Road, Warwick, Rhode Island.
