The Smithfield Town Council voted to establish a school building committee to oversee Stage 1 and Stage 2 projects for the school department and to appoint the members listed on the submitted committee roster.
Richard Gianotelli (introduced in the record as "Gianotelli, 99 Dean Avenue") explained the committee is required by the State of Rhode Island whenever capital funds are to be reimbursed and that the submitted roster met the state's minimum composition requirements. "Any time reimbursement is required or is allowed through the State of Rhode Island, they require a building committee to be set up to oversee the projects," he said.
Councilwoman Coffey moved to create the committee; the motion passed. A second motion appointed the members on the attached document and added the interim town manager and a town council member (to be named later) to the committee; that motion also passed on a voice vote.
Council members said including industry professionals and municipal representation — the town manager and a council member — was standard practice. The committee will oversee project phases associated with the town's submission for state reimbursement.
The council did not identify the future named council member at the meeting; the interim town manager was added to the roster as approved.
