The Smithfield Town Council on Tuesday authorized the Police Department to purchase a fully equipped replacement cruiser from Colonial Municipal Group of Plymouth, Massachusetts, for $49,932.70 and approved a resolution to finance the vehicle through the town's capital lease fund.
Deputy Chief Michael Smith told the council the purchase follows a December crash that totaled a 2022 cruiser. "So this is replacing that, 2022 cruiser that was totaled by, the into local trust based on that accident in December," he said. When asked about circumstances, the deputy chief described a single‑vehicle accident caused by hydroplaning in severe rain; two officers were in the cruiser at the time.
The purchase was authorized under the Rhode Island Master Price Agreement (contract number 550631) and will be financed via the Smithfield Capital Lease Program using funds available in the police equipment fund. The council approved both the purchase authorization and the financing resolution by voice votes.
Deputy Chief Smith thanked the council for its support; the department will proceed to finalize procurement and lease paperwork.
