The Fairborn City School Board recognized 12 Fairborn High School seniors who received the Ohio Governor’s Merit Scholarship for ranking in the top 5 percent of their graduating class. The district announced the scholarship can provide up to $5,000 per year for four years at any public or private nonprofit college or university in Ohio. The seniors named were Jovan DeWitt, Nathan Sherrick, Emma Miller, Mackenzie Albright, Hannah Schrader, Caitlin Walsh, Melissa Martin, Gabriel Bailey, Nicholas Cunningham, Brody Brown, Xander Weave and Benjamin Haskell.
Students from Fair Work Primary School invited families to the district’s family literacy night on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 6 p.m., describing activities including a book walk, stations where teachers show take-home activities and a chance for children to win free books. A primary school student who identified themselves as Ted spoke on behalf of the students.
Associate Professor of Art Erin Smith Glenn of Central State University presented a large oil painting she created and said she intends to loan it to the district for circulation among schools while her children remain enrolled. Smith Glenn described the work’s origin, its title (initially Up and Away, with the subtitle After the Anticipation), and said the piece won best in show two years ago. She asked the district to allow the painting to travel between schools so students across the district may see it over time.
Board members thanked the visiting students and artist during the meeting. Several community donations were listed in the agenda packet, including monetary and in-kind gifts to support students and programs, and the board acknowledged those contributions publicly.
