Board hears update on mobile health unit; contract awaiting board approval

Dayton City School District officials told the board Feb. 11 that the district’s new mobile health unit will focus initially on asthma care and wraparound services, but it is not yet operating while the contract awaits board approval.
Health Services Director Jordan Harris said the district submitted a contract for the mobile unit and the unit will begin providing services after the board approves the agreement. Harris said the mobile unit’s primary focus will be asthma care: a nurse practitioner will provide asthma education, trigger-management guidance and, because the clinician is a nurse practitioner, the ability to prescribe when appropriate.
Nut graf: Officials said the unit is intended to reach students with chronic illnesses (the director noted more than 850 students in the district live with asthma) and to provide targeted care that can reduce missed school days and improve long-term outcomes.
Board members asked whether the mobile unit would provide athletic physicals; Harris said that while the current contract language is focused on asthma and wraparound care during the school year, the district could include physicals for athletics or expand services next school year and through the district’s school-based health center.
