Senate unanimously passes bill allowing homeschooled students access to school sports under conditions

The Missouri Senate unanimously approved Senate substitute for Senate Bill 63, legislation that allows homeschooled students to participate in public school sports and extracurricular activities funded by local taxes. The motion was offered by the senator from Franklin and the senate recorded a vote of 34 ayes and 0 noes.
Senator from Franklin, State Senator, said the measure seeks to give homeschooled students access to “potentially life changing opportunities” while holding those students to the same behavioral standards and attendance requirements as public-school participants. He told colleagues the substitute contains small changes negotiated with other senators to ensure fair application.
The sponsor said the policy maintains hourly attendance requirements when directly tied to the sport or activity and noted existing disciplinary and attendance standards will still apply. There was no further debate on the floor and the bill was read a third time and passed.
