Council updates status of Main Street fire station reversion clause; school board review expected

Councilmembers updated the public on the future use of the Main Street Fire Station property and said a reversion clause tied to the parcel requires the local school board’s action before the city can move forward with legislation.

Council legal and staff discussion noted the property the city acquired had a reversion clause the school retained when it sold the site. Councilmember Banks (who introduced the item) said the city’s legal counsel and school board are in the process of clearing the reversion language. Councilmember Martin said he expected the school board to present a date for consideration soon and that, once the clause is cleared, the city would proceed with legislation to determine the station’s future use.

No formal vote or ordinance was adopted on the Main Street station at the meeting. Councilmembers described the item as unfinished business and gave staff and counsel direction to follow up with the school board to resolve the reversion condition; they said they expect that process to conclude in weeks and that further legislation will follow once the school board acts.

The discussion made clear the city cannot finalize legislation or transfer of the property while the reversion clause remains on the deed; councilmembers repeatedly described the item as contingent on the school board’s approval to release the reversion language and said counsel and school system staff are engaged in that process.
