Waukee approves plans and awards $1.179 million contract for West Area Trunk Sewer Extension Phase 3

The Waukee City Council approved plans and specifications for the West Area Trunk Sewer Extension Phase 3 project and awarded the construction contract to SM Hentges and Sons Inc for $1,179,000. Staff presented project details and recommended moving forward; council members voted to approve both the plans/specifications resolution and the contract award.
Staff described the project scope as construction of approximately 3,300 linear feet of sanitary sewer, primarily 24-inch diameter, including manholes, excavation, backfill, surface restoration and one directional boring under T Avenue. The project exhibit in council materials shows the work located west and east of T Avenue and south of 300 Eleventh Street. The project was included in the city’s capital improvement program with a total budget of $2,400,000, of which $400,000 was budgeted in the adopted FY25–29 CIP and the remaining $2,000,000 appears in the draft FY26–30 CIP.
Staff reported an interim completion milestone for sanitary installation, testing and operation by November (staff did not specify the year) and a final completion date for remaining work by May 2026. On March 11 the city received six bids; the engineer’s estimate had been $2,000,000 and the apparent low bid was $1,179,000 from SM Hentges and Sons Inc of Jordan, Minnesota. Staff and the city’s engineer reviewed the bid and recommended awarding the contract to SM Hentges and Sons Inc. Council approved the award.
The contract award and plans approval advance the project toward construction and will be followed by standard contract execution, bonding and permitting steps. Staff noted prior experience working with the contractor on earlier sewer projects.
