Senate committee advances resolution reaffirming sister-state ties with Taiwan

The Senate Agriculture and Veterans Affairs Committee voted to recommend a "do pass" on House Concurrent Resolution 3030, which reaffirms North Dakota's sister-state relationship with Taiwan and encourages expanded trade, investment and academic exchange.

Representative Bernie Satrim introduced the resolution and described personal meetings and visits with Taiwanese officials that, he said, led him to press for closer ties. "Taiwan is important to us," Satrim said, adding that Taiwan produces chips used in military and other important equipment and that North Dakota should show friendship and support.

The resolution, as read by the clerk, is "A concurrent resolution to strengthen the sister state relations between the state of North Dakota and Taiwan and to reaffirm support for Taiwan's international participation." Supporters in the committee said the measure signals friendship and invites deeper trade and educational links.

Senator Meerdal said he had recently discussed Taiwan at a conference and reiterated the point that Taiwan seeks a "seat at the table" in international fora. Senator Bridal also commented that the resolution sends a message that North Dakota values ties with Taiwan.

The committee proceeded without extended debate. A motion to give HCR 3030 a "do pass" recommendation was made and seconded; the roll call recorded affirmative votes from Senators Weston, Weber, Chairman Lewick, Vice Chair Meredith and Senator Lum, and the clerk declared the motion adopted.

The resolution moves to the next legislative step for further consideration by the Legislature.
