Jackson County board approves curriculum, technology and multiple contracts; personnel items cleared

The Jackson County Board of Education approved a package of purchases, contracts and personnel items during a regular meeting that included adoption of state-listed curriculum, large technology upgrades partly paid with federal E-rate funds, and multiple vendor and service agreements.
Board members voted to approve purchases and contracts that included a $105,590 purchase from Anatomage Incorporated for Health Science lab equipment (paid from a CCR grant fund), a $52,058.98 purchase from Mobile Communications of America to enhance transportation communications, and Juniper network switches from Clearwinds Technologies for $370,660.58 to be paid mainly with federal E-rate funds and district matching funds. Derek, a district staff member, said the district expects to receive 85% of the Juniper switch cost through E-rate and that the purchase will replace 593 classroom switches across the district.
The board approved adoption from the state'adopted curriculum list and approved purchases of curricular materials: 4'through'8 curriculum from Savas for $275,502 and 9'through'12 materials from Cengage Learning for $164,570. The board approved several contracts for services including consulting with Jeff Middleton, school improvement specialist services from Deborah McRae, a school nurse contract for student bus transportation, and a contract with Monica Neva for a spring musical (Peter Pan) to be performed districtwide the week of May 14'through'17.
The board approved job-description registrations presented at an earlier meeting for a Registered Behavioral Technician and an intervention specialist. It approved a loaner agreement with High Country Automotive LLC for a 2025 Toyota Sienna and multiple other routine contracts and purchases noted on the agenda.
Under personnel actions the board approved grouped leaves (items A'through'E), accepted three resignations (items A'through'C), approved two employments (items A and B) and multiple coaching assignments (items A'through'E); one member, Mr. King, was recorded as abstaining from the coaching assignments. The motions on these personnel items were presented and voted in grouped motions.
Financial and minutes actions included approval of the February 2025 financial statements and reconciled bank accounts, which the board recorded with total payroll expenditures of $4,685,822.32 and nonpayroll expenditures of $1,471,973.23, and approval of the board's 02/26/2025 work session and meeting minutes.
In announcements, the board recognized that Hollywood School was designated a Purple Star military support school; district staff noted the designation signals support for military families relocating to North Alabama. The board also recognized civics competition winners Krista Manning (first place) and Keeley King (third place) from Skyline; both will advance to the state round in Montgomery. The board highlighted upcoming events including spring testing season, the Exceptional Olympics at North Jackson on April 25, and the Impact Learning Center annual luau the evening of April 25. The board set its next regular work session and meeting for April 16 and recessed the meeting to reconvene on a later Wednesday (date and time as stated at the meeting).
