Kelly School students win Hartford County fire prevention poster contest

Two Kelly School students, a fourth grader and a fifth grader, won both the Southington and Hartford County levels of the Connecticut fire prevention poster contest and will attend the state luncheon on April 11.
At the March 24 Southington Board of Education meeting, Kelly School Principal Marilyn Call and art teacher Mackenzie Cook presented certificates to two students who won both the Southington town and Hartford County levels of the Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
Principal Marilyn Call said the contest is funded and supported by local fire departments and the Connecticut Fair Plan. Kelly School had never before produced winners at both county levels in the same year.
Call introduced fourth-grader Alana Armack and fifth-grader Ashlyn (surname given in meeting as Casica/Koska) and said both students would join representatives from the Connecticut Fair Plan and the Southington Fire Department at an awards luncheon on April 11, where the statewide winner will be announced. "We are beyond proud of them," Call said.
Board of Education Chairperson Clark presented certificates of excellence to the students on behalf of the district, noting the winners will represent Southington at the state contest. Principal Call described family connections to past winners and noted that Ashlyn previously won at the county level as a fourth grader.
The recognition occurred during the beginning of the public meeting and was ceremonial; no board action was required.
