Southington student reps propose numbered parking passes; robotics team wins district qualifier

Student representatives at a March 24 Southington Board of Education meeting asked the board to consider assigning numbered parking spaces to reduce congestion and unauthorized parking at Southington High School.
The students also reported extracurricular successes, including the high school robotics team winning the Western New England district qualifier and receiving the Engineering Inspiration award.
The student presenters asked the board to consider painting numbers on parking slots and issuing numbered parking passes so each pass corresponds to a single space assigned by grade. "We would assign numbers to each of the parking slots...when a student receives a parking pass, they would also receive what number their parking pass corresponds with," a student board representative said.
In follow-up questions, Board member O'Shanna asked who would pay for marking and enforcement; the student representative said the proposal was informal and that funding and details could be discussed with administration and during budget conversations. "This is not a formal proposal nor is it a permanent solution, but this is just something that we thought we could bring to your attention so that it could be discussed perhaps in executive session with those who have more information regarding the budget," the student said.
Board members commented on operational issues and community support. One board member suggested volunteers could stencil parking numbers if the board agreed, and another said assigned spots could reduce morning congestion but require students to arrive earlier. "If you do this...I'm sure you'll get volunteers and students that would be willing to do that," a board member said.
Separately during student reports, the robotics team (team 195) gave a brief presentation and showed a robot reveal video. Student presenter Lauren reported the team finished the qualifier with a 16–2 match record, won the engineering inspiration award, and won the Western New England event, qualifying them for the Hartford District Qualifier and the district championship engineering inspiration competition.
The board requested that administration follow up on the parking suggestion and indicated interest in forming a small working group if the topic advances.
The student presentations were part of the meeting's student communications segment, and no formal board action on parking was taken that night.
