Students spotlight swim, wrestling, Special Olympics and Japanese exchange at board meeting

The Oak Park - River Forest School District 200 board meeting on March 20, 2025, opened its showcase segment with presentations from athletic teams and the Japanese exchange program.
Coach Clyde Bungren introduced the boys swimming and diving team and praised the student‑athletes for combining character, leadership and competitive success. Senior swimmer Will Keys described how the team “faced adversity” this year and said the experience strengthened team camaraderie. Other student speakers — including Alfonso Cides and Lucas Consillo — described the team as close and supportive; several students noted early‑morning practices and the discipline required to reach the state meet.
Representatives from Special Olympics teams and the boys wrestling program highlighted tournament results, state qualifications and individual achievements. The wrestling coach reviewed a season that included travel to out‑of‑state tournaments, regional and sectional qualifiers, and state placings; the coach named senior qualifiers and state placers and thanked returning alumni coaches for program support.
The board also heard from Japanese program students and teacher Yoko Shumeki about a sister‑school exchange with Nishiro Shoyo High School in Japan. Several students described hosting exchange visitors, cultural learning and long‑term friendships formed through the program. The district said a gift from the sister school will be displayed in the boardroom to commemorate the relationship.
Board members thanked the student groups and coaches for the presentations and noted that the showcases link school activities with community engagement.
