Gadsden ISD human resources staff presented two related items March 20: a short: (1) overview of hiring criteria and licensure verification and (2) a new grievance-process video and online resource page.
On hiring, HR explained the district must verify required certifications and licensure that are set by the New Mexico Public Education Department for licensed staff (teachers, principals, counselors, nurses, diagnosticians and ancillary staff). HR staff noted the district can require additional experience or qualifications in local job descriptions (for example, preferring multiple years of assistant-principal experience when hiring a principal). Background checks and fingerprinting are required before employees can work on campus.
On grievance process, HR and the union jointly produced a short explainer video and placed grievance resources (forms, Spanish and English videos, and contact information) on the district website’s quick links. HR reported bargaining-unit grievance counts remain low (one two years ago, two last year, four so far this year) but said the district wants to encourage the use of the formal process and emphasized that retaliation is not allowed. HR said all stages of the grievance process take place during work hours and the district will accommodate coverage so employees are not charged leave for grievance meetings.
Board members asked how HR will publicize the grievance resources; HR said the team will include the video and link in staff communications and is available to visit campuses. Members praised the transparency and asked HR to continue outreach to ensure employees know how to use the process.
Quote: “The grievance process exists to resolve workplace concerns fairly and at the lowest possible level,” HR said in the video posted to district resources.
