Monroe County health department reports low measles activity locally, announces IDOH grant expanding disease-investigation services

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — County public-health staff told the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on March 13, 2025, that COVID-like emergency visits and wastewater concentrations have decreased while flu activity remains high statewide and the CDC reported 222 measles cases in the U.S. as of March 6.
Ms. Kelly of the Monroe County Health Department said measles vaccines are effective: two doses are about 97% effective and provide long-term protection. The department has vaccines available and provided a public phone number for clinic appointments.
In a separate agenda item, the board accepted a grant from the Indiana Department of Health to expand disease-investigation services. Ms. Kelly said the Strengthening Prevention grant will expand coverage to 16 counties and will financially support three positions; two positions already exist in the department and staff will post one additional opening to carry out the services. The department said the grant will support free testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
Aurora Diorio of the Monroe County Board of Health told commissioners the health department plans to host an open-house in April to brief county council and commissioners on programs including environmental health and disease intervention and to present the department99s priorities for 2025.
The board approved acceptance of the IDOH Strengthening Prevention grant by a 3-0 vote.
