Luis Valdez Leadership Academy principal Jose Silva and teacher Erica Garcia addressed the board during public comment to describe how the district's Prop 28 grant money is being used to expand arts opportunities for students.
Silva introduced Garcia and said the Prop 28 grant is intended to increase student participation in the arts. Garcia described classroom projects supported by the grant — including a lotería project, abstract grid drawings, and student work created with markers, Sharpies, acrylic paint, brushes and charcoal — and said the materials were purchased with Prop 28 funds. "We purchased them with the Prop 28 budget," Garcia said, and showed examples of student work during her remarks.
Garcia also said the school hopes to take students on a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on April 9 and to schedule guest speakers to discuss their artistic practice with students.
The board thanked the presenters and noted the presentation as an example of grant funds supporting classroom work. No formal board action was associated with the public comment presentation.
