Council approves opioid settlement grant program to fund local response initiatives

The Michigan City Common Council voted unanimously March 18 to appropriate opioid settlement funds and establish a local grant program aimed at supporting agencies that address opioid use and its consequences.
Sponsor Dr. Cora said the ordinance implements criteria the council approved at a prior meeting and authorizes distribution of settlement funds to organizations working on prevention, treatment and recovery initiatives.
The council opened the matter for a statutory public hearing at the meeting and received no public comment. Council then voted to suspend procedural rules and approve the ordinance on third reading; the motion to suspend the rules and adopt passed 9‑0.
Council members said they expect the appropriation to allow quick disbursement to local nonprofits and service providers that meet the previously adopted criteria. Staff was directed to ensure the grant application and award process follows the council’s adopted guidelines.
