Superintendent Dr. Garcia used her March 20 report to summarize district programs, student-assessment schedules and attendance initiatives for Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.
She described a recent Parent Leadership Training Institute graduation after a 20-week course, ongoing Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) work, and an expanded-learning program that the superintendent said is serving more students. Dr. Garcia told the board the district has started CAASPP testing for grades 3–8 and grade 11 in English language arts, math and science and urged families to avoid scheduling appointments during testing windows to ensure student participation.
Dr. Garcia emphasized an attendance campaign called “March Madness,” noting the district calculates about $90 in average funding per student day and said that a sustained 1% attendance increase can equate to roughly $2,000,000 for the district. She also said surrounding districts are facing significant budget difficulties and layoffs; by contrast, she said FSUSD did not issue layoffs this year. The superintendent said the district reduced $15,000,000 last year, and that $9,000,000 of that reduction is ongoing, remarks which were presented verbally at the meeting.
Administrative updates included classroom technology upgrades (Promethean boards), replacement of copy machines, progress on construction projects such as a performing-arts center and new kindergarten facilities, and continuing collaboration with labor partners to manage the budget. Dr. Garcia also noted an expanded approach to early literacy interventions, district credit-recovery efforts for ninth graders and enhanced supports for English learners and foster/unsheltered youth in partnership with the Solano County Office of Education.
She closed with event reminders: a Career Technical Education showcase at Fairfield High School on March 27, a district hiring fair March 29, the English Learner Advisory Committee virtual meeting on April 1, and the district spring break April 7–14.
