County approves small change order to add waterstop on 5900 West bridge to prevent leaks

County engineers asked commissioners to approve a small construction change order to install a cast-in waterstop at a concrete cold joint on the 5900 West bridge that crosses a canal to prevent future leaks.
Gary Myers, county staff, said engineers omitted the waterstop in the original design and that history shows similar omissions have led to leakage and later costly repairs. "This is a very small change order, so it's a $2,300 change order for this," Myers said, describing the device as formed into the concrete to prevent water from traveling through the joint.
Myers said the change order, together with two other recent change orders related to the West Warren waterline loop and an impacted wall, would leave the overall project well within the $1.3 million contingency currently set aside for the construction program. The total of the three anticipated change orders is about $30,000, Myers said.
Commissioners expressed support for performing the preventive work now to avoid a larger repair later. The county will process the change order and staff said commissioners would see the approval notice in their email system.
