Resident urges action; council orders signage and Public Safety review for Smithfield Road curve

A North Providence resident, Donald Burillon, told the Town Council he has endured repeated vehicle crashes into his property at a dangerous curve on Smithfield Road and urged immediate measures to protect residents and school athletes who use the road.
Burillon described five separate incidents, cited near‑misses involving pedestrians and runners from the nearby high‑school track team, and asked the council to add signs and speed‑reduction measures. “It’s not gonna be if, it’s gonna be when,” he said, describing the risk to young people using the road for practice.
Council members agreed the stretch is hazardous and voted to ask the Department of Public Works to install signage (a “dangerous blind driveway”/dangerous curve sign) and to refer the matter to the Public Safety Committee for study of additional remedial options, including temporary traffic calming or other measures. The council also asked that the Public Safety Committee consult community policing and DPW staff and contact the resident about committee meeting details.
The motions to request DPW signage and to refer the issue to the Public Safety Committee were made, seconded and approved.
