Superintendent highlights student and staff achievements, including state championships and inaugural female wrestling champion

Superintendent Scott Cowell used his report to highlight student and staff achievements across Carroll County Schools, noting Advanced Placement awards at all five high schools and several state and regional competition wins.

Cowell said all five high schools received at least one Advanced Placement award, and he highlighted Mary Lois Griffith as a state literary contest champion and district star student. He also noted Mount Zion High School won its regional division championship in literary competition. In technology competitions, Cowell reported a state champion from Central Middle School (Hudson Hooten) and from Mount Zion High School (Gavin Vick). He said, "We had from Central, Middle School, a state champion in, Hudson Hooten. And from Mount Zion High School, we had Gavin Vick."

Cowell also told the board that Bentley Burke of Central High School became the district's first ever female state wrestling champion. He highlighted Bowden High School’s weightlifting team winning a sixth consecutive Class A state championship and several regional championships and state-level finishes in basketball and wrestling across the district.

The superintendent announced upcoming events including a Veil Rica Middle School 20th anniversary celebration (a drop-in event around noon on Saturday) and said the district would circulate graduation dates soon. He reminded the board the state testing window follows spring break and encouraged continued teacher preparation for testing.

The recognitions were presented earlier in the meeting by Jared Griffiths and others; coaches, students and staff accepted awards in person.
