At a discovery hearing in State v. R.C. Curtis, Detective Hines testified about documents and property related to a July 2016 arrest, defense counsel offered a document for the record and the court admitted it for purposes of the hearing. The judge set jury selection for Aug. 18 and indicated a multi-day trial would follow.
Detective Hines confirmed he provided a 22-page set of documents to the parties and testified that the property room had no separate record of certain personal property for a collateral witness referenced in the detective's emails. Defense counsel reviewed an offense report (case number 16158115) during the hearing and had the court mark a packet as a defense exhibit. The judge said, "defense 1 March 20 1 is admitted" for the purposes of the discovery hearing.
The court directed the state to locate the booking packet for the July 2016 arrest of Antonio Jones and ordered counsel to exchange outstanding materials. The parties discussed whether additional cell-phone evidence existed; the detective said, "Not that I know of." The court also instructed parties that if discovery delivery from an outside office (Selma) was delayed they should notify the court and that counsel could bring hard drives for large digital disclosures.
Judge Stephanie Boyd set jury selection for Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. and estimated the state's case-in-chief could last up to five days. The court scheduled pretrial and in-limine matters to be handled before trial where possible and directed parties to sign discovery acknowledgments before leaving the hearing.
