The Community Resource Center reported to Charleston County Council that it has expanded services countywide from its start in North Charleston and distributed large volumes of food and supplies, director Mike Smith said.
"We open, 3947... River Verde Lane. And we expanded from North Charleston throughout the whole county," Smith told council, and described the center as providing both cooling and heating services and wrap‑around supports for people experiencing homelessness during the school year.
Smith said the center distributed an estimated 6,500,000 pounds of groceries over two and a half years and delivered about 300 air conditioners and 250 heaters, along with diapers, hygiene kits, clothing and school supplies. "In other words, we were and still is that wrap around services that's so desperately needed in our community," Smith said.
In the presentation Smith credited volunteers and partners including the Charleston County School District, Charleston Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office and multiple towns across the county. He said the center ran 15 major distributions across the tri‑county area and worked with schools on summer enrichment programs; he also announced a new partnership to bring mobile auto‑mechanic training in coordination with Mercedes‑Benz.
Council members praised the center’s work. Chair Pryor thanked Smith and singled out volunteer leaders; Councilmember Boyd and Councilmember Honeycutt said constituents had expressed appreciation for services in their districts.
The presentation was informational; council did not take formal action on the report.
