Committee extends livestock inspection fee schedule and advisory committee through 2030

Rebecca Lewis, staff to the committee, told members the bill would extend the current livestock inspection fee schedule, the Livestock Identification Advisory Committee, and a reporting requirement through July 1, 2030. Representative Dent, ranking member, outlined the bill’s history, saying the brand program relies on fees and that prior extensions were granted in 2019 and 2023 to keep the program solvent. "The brand program is kinda like a title for your car. You know, you put a brand on your livestock, and that's your title. That's your ownership," Dent said, explaining the purpose of the program.
Representative Birnbaum said the program helps keep animals safe and prevents disease. The committee held a voice vote and staff announced the result as 11 ayes, 0 nays, and 0 excused or absent. By that vote, SB 5,485 was reported out of committee with a due-pass recommendation.
The bill, as described in committee, extends the livestock inspection fee schedule and the Livestock Identification Advisory Committee and continues the reporting requirement to prevent program insolvency and to maintain animal-tracking functions used for ownership and disease prevention.
