George Walthall, representing local Master Gardeners, asked the Prattville City Council to promote an April 3 meet-and-greet at Pratt Village Garden connected to the Alabama Master Gardeners Association annual meeting.
Walthall told the council the statewide Master Gardeners program returned about $11,000,000 in value to Alabama last year and said the local demonstration garden contributed a volunteer-value estimate of about $245,000 at an assumed $20-per-hour valuation. He also said the group donated about "16 hundred pounds" of fresh vegetables to the AICC (local food assistance) last year and that local volunteers and the organization work with the city on signage and demonstration projects.
The mayor and council thanked the Master Gardeners for their volunteer work; the mayor also referenced recent community tree giveaways and other volunteer events.
No council action was required; the presentation served as a community announcement and invitation for the April 3 event.
