The commission’s approval makes the subcommittees active and allows them to hold meetings, choose chairs and vice chairs, and bring substantive items back to the full commission for ratification. A member asked how subcommittee leadership will be chosen; staff said leads will recommend agencies and each subcommittee will elect its own chair and vice chair at its first meeting.
Commissioners also approved a youth logo competition described by Lampkin as an engagement project to encourage students to reflect on juvenile justice reforms. The contest is aimed at public-school students across grade levels; Lampkin said organizers have contacted school boards statewide. The contest prize and distribution were clarified during discussion: Lampkin said winners will receive a $1,000 prize and the program will recognize entries publicly. Lampkin said, if approved, the competition would begin April 1 and end in May, with winners selected over the summer.
