The finance subcommittee on March 11 approved creation of a special fund to hold donations for the 320th celebration committee, using the authority of Massachusetts General Laws, chapter 44, section 53I. The fund segregates donations received for the tricentennial-related events and activities so they can be expended only for those purposes.
Susan Petrone explained the fund is intended to accept donations from banks and other private donors that the committee may use for activities such as a photo contest, mural planning, and Framingham Day events. Petrone said some uses (for example donor-funded contest prizes) cannot be paid from the city operating budget and therefore require a segregated special fund.
A councilor moved to approve the creation of the special fund, the motion was seconded, and the committee recorded the vote in favor.
The school and city staff said the committee will establish a budget and meet in April to set priorities for the celebrations and the use of funds.
