Las Vegas Arts Commission votes to end four standing subcommittees

The Las Vegas Arts Commission voted to abolish four of its standing subcommittees and will instead consider those topics during full commission meetings.

Commissioners voted to eliminate the Education, Project Development, Public Art Advisory and Fast Track subcommittees after staff and commissioners said work done in smaller groups could be handled by the full commission and that doing so would broaden participation. Commissioner Chee moved to eliminate the subcommittees; another commissioner seconded the motion. The commission voted in favor and the motion passed.

Staff said the Education subcommittee was the most active of the group and typically met briefly for updates; Project Development previously met in August to review Percent for the Arts project proposals that the full commission then voted on in September. Members and staff said combining those discussions into the regular Arts Commission meeting would add voices to the conversations but could modestly lengthen meeting time.

Commissioners and staff noted advantages and disadvantages: subcommittees can speed decision-making by using smaller groups, while full-commission discussion brings more perspectives and potential momentum for projects. Staff said the Fast Track Subcommittee historically had met rarely if at all.

The motion concluded with an oral vote; the record shows commissioners answered in the affirmative and the chair declared the motion carried.
