The House Tourism, Recreation and Economic Development Committee voted to approve two ceremonial resolutions: House Resolution 50, designating March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day in Pennsylvania; and House Resolution 61, designating April 18, 2025, as Erie Day.
Representative Malagari spoke in favor of House Resolution 50, describing the historical ties between Pennsylvania and Greece and urging the committee’s support. “This day is not only a significant day for Greece, but also holds a very profound meaning for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and The United States, reflecting our shared value of freedom, our value of democracy, and our value of enduring friendship,” Malagari said. He recounted Philadelphia’s historical support for Greek independence, noted organizations such as the Federation of Hellenic American Societies of Philadelphia and the Greater Delaware Valley and cited academic links including a memorandum of understanding between the Hellenic Aerospace Industry and Lehigh University.
Josh, a committee staff member, explained the measures: “House Resolution 50 designates 03/25/2025 as Greek Independence Day in Pennsylvania. House Resolution 61 designates 04/18/2025 as Erie Day in Pennsylvania.” Chair Lee James called for negative votes; the committee recorded none and Chair James announced both resolutions passed.
Representative Malagari closed by asking for an affirmative vote and saying “Long live Greece.” The resolutions are ceremonial designations and do not create new legal obligations or funding in the transcript record.
