Twinsburg high school students teach Spanish to elementary pupils in new partnership

Twinsburg High School Spanish students have begun quarterly visits to Samuel Bissell Elementary School to teach basic Spanish vocabulary and cultural activities, district staff told the Board of Education.
Mrs. Johnson and Spanish teacher Mr. Santiago described a pilot partnership in which Spanish 2 students deliver lessons, read bilingual children’s books and lead games for second- and third-grade classes. Mr. Santiago said the program gives older students a chance to “showcase their work, reinforce their learning, and their presentational skills.”
Elementary teachers reported visible benefits. Johnson described a pupil who moved from Argentina and, within weeks, helped teach a lesson to her classmates; staff said the experience “made her feel celebrated and recognized.” High‑school volunteers told the board the work reinforced inclusivity and gave them classroom leadership experience.
The district presented photos and short student remarks during the culture-and-climate update. Teachers and presenters said the program will continue quarterly and that the district hopes it will grow across additional classrooms; staffing and scheduling were described as operational matters to be managed by participating teachers and the high school Spanish program.
