Twinsburg board backs move to standardize MTSS across district

The Twinsburg City School District Board of Education voted unanimously to revise a 2024–25 strategic-plan action step to require a consistent, districtwide Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process.

MTSS coordinator Julian Walker told the board that “MTSS is a structured program and it's a proactive framework for all students” and described tiered academic, behavioral and attendance supports being aligned across buildings.

The change to the culture-and-climate action step directs the district to implement a consistent MTSS process “as measured by the MTSS end-of-year audit.” Walker said staff surveys and building reviews informed the plan: 140 staff responded to a district survey and about 35% reported MTSS was already working well in their building; inconsistency in vocabulary and practice was the most-cited challenge.

Walker outlined immediate steps: quarterly principal meetings to review MTSS, a districtwide list of MTSS vocabulary, and a guidebook for teachers to be completed by the end of the school year. She also said future work could include a parent-facing MTSS guide, available in print or on the district website. Mr. Bandiera, who oversees culture and climate, framed the goals as prevention-focused: early data review and evidence-based interventions to reduce later referrals.

The board approved the strategic-plan revision by roll call 5–0. The revision was presented during the strategic-plan update and was recorded as action item J.6 on the agenda.

Board members asked for continued updates; Walker said she has met with each building and will bring the draft vocabulary and guidebook back to the board for review.
