Miami Lakes events committee to revisit Halloween scheduling; final date deferred

Miami Lakes Events Committee members discussed scheduling for the committee’s upcoming Halloween and holiday events and agreed to revisit final dates at the next meeting.

The committee opened the item after the chair moved to place “event dates” on the agenda. Chair Brian Rodriguez said the group needed to “take a look at the dates so we can get the stuff … put in the calendar immediately.” Members debated holding the Halloween event the Saturday before Halloween, on the Friday before Halloween, or on Halloween night itself. Several members argued Saturday would work better for families and volunteers; others said an event on the evening of Oct. 31 would likely draw a larger turnout.

Committee members also discussed ways to involve schools. A school staff member named Sobo volunteered to prepare a field-trip packet so some schools could send students as a daytime field trip if principals approve. The committee agreed to wait for confirmations from Sobo and other schools before picking a final date. One member asked to postpone a final decision for one month so schools and partners could respond.

No formal vote set the Halloween date during the meeting. Committee members said they will reconvene on event dates at the next regular meeting and use a secondary “backup” date if weather or other conflicts require it.

Committee members also discussed logistics tied to the date, including early set-up and access to the community center. Members raised concerns about contractors and existing rentals at the community center on possible dates and noted some activities (karate, HOA meetings) are regular uses of the space.

The chair said the committee will revisit the item next month after school confirmations and vendor availability are known.
