The Sunbury City Events and Commemoration Committee added the Jackson Preston Memorial Fishing Derby to its agenda on March 20 and heard a presentation from Vicky Belcher of Sunbury Christian Church about event logistics.
Vicky Belcher, administrative assistant at Sunbury Christian Church (870 Admiral Drive), told the committee the event typically runs about 9 a.m.–noon, offers hot dogs, chips and prizes (including awards for biggest fish), and will incorporate a blood drive and Angel Works (a nonprofit that supports children with cancer). The church will use its parking lot and facilities for food distribution; the fish for the derby will be delivered on the Friday before the event. Organizers said a portion of activity takes place on church property and that they will use the reservoir for fishing.
Staff confirmed the event had circulated through fire, police and city services and that no issues were identified; the committee granted the agenda addition by roll call. Laurie Preston, the honoree’s mother, was not present but is coordinating the event. Organizers said proceeds and donations benefit Angel Works and participant giveaways have included donated fishing poles in past years.
