The board discussed draft communications tools March 18 intended to make the district's bullying and social-emotional learning procedures easier to navigate for parents, staff and students.
Administration presented a parent guide that condenses board policy and administrative procedures into plain language, links to the official policy, and includes sample follow-up letters used by counsel to clarify process and potential outcomes. A staff-facing flow document lays out the reporting form, investigation steps, interview guidance and possible conclusions. The materials also describe restorative practices as a preferred intervention, noting that restorative processes require willing participants.
Board members asked that the materials be tested with students and parent leaders for clarity and that the staff guide clarify who may serve as a 'safe adult' during interviews; administration said the intent is to offer district staff trained to support the process and to explore reasonable accommodations when possible. The Board of Instructional Council (BIC) gave generally positive feedback at a recent parent meeting; administration said it would gather additional feedback from BIC and student representatives and return revised drafts.
Why it matters: parents and students told the board they want clearer expectations and steps when an incident occurs. The drafts aim to reduce confusion, improve follow-up communication and make the district's response more transparent while preserving confidentiality requirements.
Ending: Administration will collect further input from BIC and student advisory groups, refine the guides and return to the board with updates; the flowchart graphic and linked materials remain part of the package under review.
