Indian Head Community Action Agency outlines local services including $5,000 small‑business grants and Head Start

Indian Head Community Action Agency staff described a suite of social‑service programs they operate in Sawyer County and six surrounding counties, and asked the board to refer constituents to their services.
"One such program is our Community Services Block Grant," said Rhonda Schaffer, ICAA HR director, describing emergency assistance that can help with rent, transportation, utility bills and other immediate needs. Schaffer said ICAA refers clients to other in‑agency and external resources to support long‑term self‑sufficiency.
Schaffer and outreach specialist Penny Scherzer reviewed a variety of programs: a Diverse Business Assistance Program that provides $5,000 grants to qualifying entrepreneurs; QUEST child‑care development support to help in‑home providers obtain licensing; Head Start and Early Head Start for children ages 0–5; and local food pantries, including the Hayward Community Shelf. Scherzer said funding for the agency comes from federal and state grants and private foundations.
Scherzer also described additional services: a home‑visiting program in partnership with Healthy Families America for families with infants; diaper delivery and car‑seat installation; Lifeline discounts through USAC for phone and internet service; an educational RICE grant on adult immunizations; Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) providing housing assistance; and a legal assistance program (LAB) offering civil‑court help and referrals for victims.
The presenters left printed brochures for board members and noted the agency’s main office is in Ladysmith. No formal board action was requested at the meeting.
ICAA asked board members to refer residents in need and to contact the agency for additional materials or follow‑up questions.
