Historic preservation board grants continuance for Atlantic Way demolition application

The Historic Preservation Board of the City of Miami Beach on July 11 agreed to continue an application for 7801 Atlantic Way to the board's Sept. 12 meeting after the applicant requested more time for neighbor outreach.
The item, listed as HPB-2305727801, concerns work on a site that includes a 1935 house described in public comment. Applicant Michael Larkin asked the board for the continuation so he and his team could meet with the neighborhood association and nearby residents.
The Miami Design Preservation League submitted public comment urging the continuance and asked the board to require a fuller study of the existing 1935 house on the site. "We do believe that no attention at all appears to have been given to the contributing 1935 historic house," Jack Finglass of the Miami Design Preservation League said during public comment.
Larkin, the applicant's representative, said the team had engaged with the immediate neighbor across the street and the condominium association president and that they would continue outreach before returning to the board. "We've never claimed this is an unsafe structure and we did submit a research report," Larkin said in rebuttal to public comments.
After brief questions from board members about whether the applicant would address salvage and recycling plans when the item returns, board member Miss Lovell moved to continue the matter; the motion was seconded and the board voted to continue the item to the Sept. 12, 2023 meeting.
The continuance means staff and the applicant will return with any revised materials, additional outreach documentation and any supplemental studies the board requests.
