Board approves request to create reentry coordinator position pending state funding

Brian Pine, director of the Community and Economic Development Office, told the board the position is intended as an additional reentry coordinator and would be a full‑time, regular‑service union position (unit/grade 16). Pine said the city must apply for and receive funding from the Vermont Department of Corrections before the position would be established; the request would use FY26 state funds if awarded.
Councilors asked about the funding source and the office’s confidence in receiving it; Pine said the administration was urged to seek the state funding and characterized it as a priority for both the administration and the legislature.
Motion and vote: A councilor moved to approve and recommend that the City Council approve creation of a second reentry coordinator position (regular service, full‑time, unit/grade 16); Councilor Carpenter seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
If the state award is not received, Pine said the city would not move forward with creating the position.
