Linn County will again pass a yearly resolution to participate in DNR confined animal feeding operation comment process

Linn County planning staff asked supervisors on Jan. 13 to place the county’s annual confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) resolution on consent so the county can provide comment to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources if a CAFO permit application is received.
Charlie Nichols, Planning and Development Director, said the county does not currently have a proposed confined animal feeding operation project. "We do not have a confined animal feeding operation project proposed in Linn County at this point," Nichols said, but the county passes the resolution every January so it will have a voice in the state permitting process should an applicant apply. The county does not have approval authority for CAFOs; the resolution only authorizes staff to comment to the Iowa DNR during the master matrix review. (Charlie Nichols)
Nichols told the board that the county has not seen a CAFO application in "over two decades" but said passing the annual resolution preserves the county’s ability to comment on state review. Supervisors agreed to place the resolution on the consent agenda for the Wednesday meeting; no public hearing or formal vote on a CAFO permit occurred during the Jan. 13 meeting.
Ending: The board will consider the CAFO resolution on its consent agenda at the next business meeting; county staff remain prepared to comment on any future state CAFO applications under the DNR master matrix process.
