"The Colorado Civil Rights Commission is a 7 member bipartisan board," Sullivan said, and he explained that the commission "reviews appeals of cases investigated and dismissed by the Colorado Civil Rights Division, conducts hearings involving illegal discriminatory practices, initiates investigations regarding discrimination issues with broad public policy implications, [and] is available to advise the governor and general assembly regarding policies and legislation that address discrimination." Sullivan introduced Kelly as the nominee and noted her union leadership.
The nomination matter was brief: Jade Rose Kelly, who identified herself as the president of CWA Local 7799, spoke to the committee about her labor and civil-rights background and her work across Colorado. "My life's work has been dedicated to advancing workers rights, equity, and civil rights in both the public and private sector," Kelly said, noting her work representing public-sector workers and her roles with the Communications Workers of America and the National Center for Women in Information Technology.
Committee members asked no substantive questions following Kelly’s remarks. A senator moved that the committee send the nomination to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation; the motion received a second and the committee recorded a 3-2 vote in favor. The committee chair announced, "That appointment will proceed to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation by vote of 3 to 2." The committee did not adopt any amendments or place additional conditions on the nomination.
The nomination now goes to the full Senate for consideration and a confirmation vote.
