Senate committee forwards three appointees to Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee on March 10 heard introductions of three appointees to the Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission and unanimously moved their confirmations to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation and placement on the consent calendar.
Dr. Nikita Ladd, administrator of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission, introduced Catherine Stewart, David Friedland and Jeff Ueland. "Miss Stewart is a reappointment," Ladd said, noting Stewart has served about six years on the commission and brings more than 25 years of experience in solid and hazardous waste matters. Ladd described the commission’s role as adopting rules that minimize waste and provide safe treatment methods to protect public health.
Catherine Stewart, who Ladd said currently serves as chair of the commission, told the committee she is seeking a third term and described her background as a geologist and hydrogeologist focused on groundwater monitoring before and after landfill placement. David Friedland described a career in solid waste and recycling, including work on commercial composting and leading waste-diversion efforts at Denver International Airport. Jeff Ueland described more than 30 years in regulated industry and said he manages an engineering group for a global technology company that operates processes producing regulated wastes.
Senator Malika (Chair) called for a motion; the vice chair moved to send the appointments of Catherine Stewart, David Friedland and Jeff Ueland to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation and to place the confirmations on the consent calendar. The motion passed on a roll call; committee members recorded included votes of support during the roll call sequence and the chair announced the confirmations were approved unanimously, "8 to 0."
The committee recorded no amendments and closed the witness phase after introductions and brief remarks. The appointees will await action by the full Senate.
