Peachtree City — The City Council voted to terminate a recreation program agreement with Fayette County and approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Fayette County Board of Education that swaps use of recreation facilities.
Staff explained the existing agreement had Fayette County providing $150,000 a year to level usage fees for city recreation programs. Staff said the city’s recreation master plan recommended raising some fees and that Fayette County would not agree to increase its contribution; the council approved terminating the agreement. "The county was not willing to entertain any increase in that amount," staff said during the discussion.
In a second action, Harold Layton presented an IGA that allows the Board of Education to use one city baseball field at the Peachtree City Athletic Complex while the city may use the gymnasium at the Center of Innovation (the former Booth Middle School gym) for Friday and Saturday events. Layton told council there are no fees associated with the swap. The council approved the IGA.
Why it matters: termination of the county fee agreement will require the city to revisit program fees, program budgets or facility use arrangements for recreation programs. The IGA provides short‑term facility access reciprocity to accommodate McIntosh High School’s baseball‑field renovation while giving city recreation use of indoor gym space.
Next steps: staff will implement the termination and proceed with planning for future fee structures; the IGA moves forward per the council vote.
