Peachtree City staff proposed a minor ordinance revision Oct. 12 to allow the police chief or other persons qualified under Georgia law to administer oaths of office to police officers.
A staff member who discussed the proposal said the change stems from prior practice at training centers where families attend swearing-in events; the revision would add the police chief or any other person qualified to administer oaths in Georgia to those authorized under city ordinance. "We discussed this topic at your last council retreat, changing some verbiage in the ordinance to allow myself and other qualified persons to administer the oath in the state of Georgia," the staff member said.
Council members supported the change in concept, noting it could allow swearing-in ceremonies to take place where family members can be present. No vote occurred at the work session because a quorum was not present.
