County reports routine jail inspection and ongoing structural monitoring; Acxiom engaged to assess cracks

Johnson County staff told the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee on Jan. 9, 2024, that the jail passed an annual inspection with no new major deficiencies but that recurring issues and structural concerns remain under active monitoring.
A county representative said the annual jail inspection on Jan. 7 found typical operational issues and reiterated previously noted health and safety concerns for inmates and staff. The county reported that contractor Acxiom inspected visible cracks and cell-block issues and agreed with the county's observations; Acxiom will continue to monitor and provide reports and a proposed timeline for addressing the building shell and roof. County staff indicated the structural-monitoring reports and any repair timeline will be discussed in a Jan. 22 work session.
Committee members noted that even with ongoing maintenance, older facilities show recurring wear — examples cited included blocked vents and minor sanitation issues that inspectors typically flag. Staff said that assessments related to any site-selection or renovation planning would remain in scope for architects and contractors as the committee moves forward with combined studies and possible new construction planning.
No formal action was taken on the inspection report at the meeting; staff will provide the monitoring reports and a contractor timeline at an upcoming work session.
