Author proposes requiring insurers to deliver full policy on request after issuance; committee lays bill over

Senator Seaburger told the Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee that she had difficulty obtaining a full copy of her auto-insurance contract despite receiving the declarations page, and she sponsored Senate File 2420 to require insurers to deliver a copy of the issued policy to the named policyholder upon request.
Aaron Cocking, president and CEO of the Insurance Federation of Minnesota, said insurers generally have no objection and many carriers already provide a full policy copy. Cocking said the association worked with the author to craft language acceptable to carriers and consumers. He told the committee the change would clear up consumer confusion and make the contract terms more accessible.
The committee adopted an author’s A1 amendment and laid Senate File 2420 over for further consideration.
