The Newton County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to set an interim estimated millage rate of 10 for fiscal year 2026 on March 18.
Finance Director Britney White explained state requirements under House Bill 581 require the county to provide an estimated rate to the tax assessor early in the process. White emphasized the figure is preliminary: “this is very early on in the process. The millage rate that we are seeking approval at tonight does not necessarily mean that will be our final millage rate,” she said.
Commissioners stressed the estimate is intended to meet statutory deadlines and to ensure sufficient revenue while the budget process continues. Commissioner Everest moved to establish the interim rate of 10; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
Several commissioners noted the number is conservative and that a final rate will be set later in the summer after budget briefings and further revenue analysis. Commissioner Mason recalled earlier millage levels and urged fiscal restraint; Commissioner Edwards and others said staff will work to reduce the rate if revenues allow.
The board recorded the interim rate so the tax assessor can place it on preliminary assessments; staff said a final millage rate would likely be adopted in July.
